Cabinet last week approved the setting up of an 11-member Coordinating Taskforce headed by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) Director to recover unlawfully acquired State resources.
In the proposal submitted to Cabinet by Justice and Prisons Reforms Minister Thalatha Atukorale, it was highlighted that all law enforcement agencies have said that the lack of a formal coordination mechanism was the major obstacle in combating and mitigating – if not eliminating – organised criminality, money laundering, and terrorist financing.
Hence the proposal to set up the taskforce in order to establish an effective coordination mechanism with operational-level personnel was approved by the Cabinet.
