The Hotels Association of Sri Lanka (THASL) yesterday welcomed the latest update of the UK travel advice on Sri Lanka, noting that it is timely and positive news for the industry. “This is very positive news for our travel industry and very timely. Although we may not see an immediate impact on arrivals as the country is closed for foreign visitors at the moment, it is an endorsement of the great steps taken by the country collectively in handling the virus and builds confidence for future travellers who are interested in visiting the country,” THASL said in a statement.

In 2019, UK was Sri Lanka’s second biggest tourist source market with 198,776 arrivals, though down by 22% from 2018.

Noting that although the advisories can change from time to time, THASL said the association is greatly committed to extending their fullest support to the Government in the battle against the pandemic.

“Already a large number of hotels have been offered to be used as quarantine facilities to ease the burden on the nation, and hoteliers have also come forward with various offerings for the front-line staff to show our appreciation and gratitude for their selfless work. Some hotels are offering room nights free of charge, some are giving discounts at their restaurants and even a complimentary wedding for a lucky couple is on offer. Whilst their service is immeasurable, it is a collective effort from the industry to show them how much they are appreciated,” the statement added.
