Famous veteran singer and Gypsies band leader Sunil Perera passed away yesterday from COVID-19-related complications. He was 68 years old at the time of his death which came a week before his 69th birthday (14 September).
Perera, who was treated for COVID-19 at a private hospital in Colombo for nearly three weeks, returned home a few days ago.
However, he was admitted to the hospital again three days ago due to an infection in his lungs.
A vocalist, guitarist, songwriter and composer, Sunil Perera played a revolutionary role in the field of group music in Sri Lanka for over five decades and created several highly popular songs, with catchy tunes and humorous lyrics, mostly about Sri Lankan politics.
