Sri Lanka Podujana Party (SLPP) General Secretary Sagara Kariyawasam says the party will allow the United National Party (UNP), its coalition partner at the upcoming Local Government polls, to decide on the alliance’s mayoral candidate for Colombo.
Speaking to the Daily FT, Kariyawasam said it was decided to join hands with the UNP to contest for the local authorities in the Colombo district during bi-lateral discussions held between the two groups.
“The SLPP candidates will contest in Colombo with the UNP under a symbol chosen by the UNP,” he said. “Therefore, the decision on the mayoral candidate is 100% with the UNP and the SLPP will have no party to play in the decision process,” he said.
Speaking to the Media after placing the bonds for the 13 Local Government Bodies in the Colombo District last week, Kariyawasam said the SLPP and the UNP have decided to work in unison going forward on behalf of the country. He expressed his confidence that the SLPP will emerge victorious at the upcoming polls.
