The Supreme Court yesterday ordered the Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC) to register as many as 82 medical students who graduated from the South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine (SAITM).
The order was delivered following the examination of a Petition filed by three graduates of SAITM. The petition was examined by a bench compromising of Justices Buveneka Aluvihare, L.T.B. Dehideniya and P. Padman Surasen.
The Supreme Court ordered the SLMC to register the students within a period of three weeks, and said that the SLMC does not have the legal right to deny registration to the SAITM graduates, and by doing so was violating the Fundamental Rights of the graduates.
Justice Surasen had pointed out that both the Court of Appeal as well as the Supreme Court had earlier ordered the SLMC to register SAITM graduates, and that the SLMC could not continue to deny doing so under the legislation governing the Council.
Therefore, the Court ordered that SLMC take steps to register the SAITM medical students as medical practitioners in the next three weeks, and pay the petitioners legal fees of Rs. 200,000 each. Under the latest Court Order, about 82 SAITM students could be registered by the SLMC, legal experts said.
