Sri Lanka has been ranked amongst the top five ‘Wellness Tourism Destinations’ in the world by the Global Wellness Institute.
The announcement was made by Tourism Minister Prasanna Ranatunga in Paris during a meeting of the tourism ministers held in parallel to the IFTM Top Resa in Paris, France.
Secretary of State to the Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne, Egypt Tourism Minister Khaled El-Anany, Greece Tourism Minister Vassilis Kikilias, Jordan Tourism Minister Nayef Hamidi Mohomad Al-Fayez, Dominican Republic Tourism Minister David Collado, and Mauritius Tourism Minister Steven Obeegadoo were present at the meeting.
Ranatunga pointed out that post-COVID-19 pandemic, most of the tourists in the world have paid more attention to mental and physical well-being and practices.
He highlighted that Sri Lanka has Ayurveda and Hela Wedakama (traditional medicine), which have been in existence for thousands of years, and that the Government has taken steps to develop the sector and more allocations have been made to further strengthen the wellness tourism sector of the industry.
