The voters of Colombo on Saturday stayed true to their historic allegiance, ensuring the United National Party (UNP) received a wide majority of 46% to retain their control of the city.
The UNP polled 131, 353 votes, well ahead of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna’s 60,087 votes (21.08%) and the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) 31,421 votes (11.03%) to record a significant victory.
The result also means that Colombo will have its first female mayor.
Following the victory, Senanayake assured she would make Colombo an exemplary and efficient city that was people-friendly during her tenure. Incumbent mayor of Dehiwala-Mount Lavinia Sunethra Ranasinghe also scraped through to retain her position.
