The work was undertaken on the instructions of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa who is also the Minister of Urban Development and Housing.

Ministry of Urban Development and Housing Secretary Sirinimal Perera, Urban Development Authority (UDA) Director General Prasad Ranaweera and many other Government officials were also present at the occasion.
Due to the lack of proper maintenance during the previous Government, the floating market had fallen into disrepair, but it has been completely done up now, UDA officials said. The total number of stalls in the reopened floating mall is 103.
