President Wickremesinghe on Thursday reaffirmed his willingness to make unpopular and challenging decisions to secure the future of the country.
“If meaningful steps are not taken, Sri Lanka will not receive support from international partners,” he told Parliament during the third reading of the 2023 Budget. Wickremesinghe also noted that although certain decisions will not help him politically, he is taking them to secure the country’s future.
He said the challenges faced by the country should be solved by addressing host of structural issues overlooked during the past three years.
The President said the Government will be compelled to take certain decisions and will try to implement them in a way that will have the least adverse impact on the people.
He noted that despite difficulties, everyone should help take forward the economy.
The President said he cannot allow the economy to crash which will not only destroy businesses but the future of the entire county.
President Wickremesinghe stressed that he is prepared to take difficult and unpopular decisions and requested the people to be prepared to make sacrifices for the sake of the country’s future.
