  • Says ready to accept decision on term and step down any time

President Maithripala Sirisena yesterday declared he would agree with the Supreme Court pronouncement, insisting that he was ready to step down at any given point.

“No one should get excited over my decision to seek the Supreme Court’s determination on the expiry of my term of office. With the people behind me, not only can I change party, I can change the Government too,” the President said addressing a public rally in Debarawewa yesterday. Noting that he has no intention to remain as the President forever, Sirisena however said that he will continue to stay committed to fulfill his vision of uplifting the country, which is well-accepted by the world, to a level where reconciliation reigns.

“I sought the Supreme Court determination to clarify the two public opinions expressed on the term of the presidency and not to seek out how many more years I could continue to function as President,” he stressed.
