President Maithripala Sirisena in a letter addressed to Speaker Karu Jayasuriya informed Parliament that the recent declaration of a State of Emergency was carried out under the provisions of the Public Security Ordinance.
“I am of the opinion that by reason of the existence of a public emergency in Sri Lanka, it is expedient, so to do, in the interests of public security, the protection of public order and the maintenance of supplies and services essential to the life of the community,” said Speaker Jayasuriya, reading out the letter received from the President.
“Know ye that, I, Maithripala Sirisena, President, by virtue of the powers vested in me by Section 2 of the Public Security Ordinance, as amended by the Act, No. 8 of 1959, Law, No. 6 of 1978 and the Act, No. 28 of 1988, do by this Proclamation declare that the provisions of Part II of that Ordinance, shall forthwith come into operation throughout Sri Lanka on 06 March 2018,” he added.
