The Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) has issued new guidelines to the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) on load shedding during the weekend, whilst announcing that there will be ‘no power interruptions’ at night.

“Considering the declining demand over the weekends, the Commission instructed CEB to avoid power cuts or to minimise cuts on during the weekend,” PUCSL Chairman Janaka Ratnayake told journalists yesterday.

He said the decision was also considered following the lengthy power cuts experienced over the past few days. Accordingly, daytime power cuts have been reduced to three-hours in areas A, B, and C, while two and a half-hour power cuts will be imposed in other areas today.

Ratnayake said no power cuts will be imposed on Sunday except in areas A, B, and C for two and a half-hours during daytime. “The power cuts experienced was due to non-availability of fuel. Over 400 MW oil-fired plants were inactive due to lack of fossil fuel to operate them,” he pointed out.
