Weightlifter Indika Dissanayake will be the overall captain of the 160-member Sri Lanka contingent to the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games announced by the National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka (NOCSL) yesterday. The Commonwealth Games will be held from 28 July to 8 August.
Sri Lanka women’s cricket captain Chamari Athapaththu will join Dissanayake as the flag bearers during the opening ceremony.
Maj. Gen. (Retd.) Dampath Fernando is the chef de mission.
The Sri Lankan contingent includes 110 athletes (50 males and 60 females) and the rest team officials and admin and supporting staff. Sri Lanka will take part in 14 disciples namely: Aquatics (3), Athletics (6), Badminton (6), Basketball (8), Beach Volleyball (4), Boxing (8), Gymnastics (8), Cricket Women (15), Judo (5), Para Athletics (1), Rugby (26), Squash (4), Weightlifting (10), Wrestling (6).
The Sri Lanka team will leave in batches according to their event schedules. The first batch of 88 athletes will leave on 25 July.
