Yesterday, the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) announced it had given approval to increase the price of milk powder following appeals from importers.
Accordingly, a 400g packet of full cream milk powder would be increased by Rs. 20 and a 1 kg packet by Rs. 50, the Industry and Commerce Ministry said.
The approval was given after milk powder companies sought the permission of the Cost of Living Committee and the CAA to increase the price of a kilogram of milk powder by Rs. 100.
The companies say they face difficulties and problems to provide milk powder at the Government stipulated prices because of the price increase in the world market and the appreciation of the dollar.
A Ministry official said the price increase would not affect infant milk powder prices. The price will be increased on all milk powder manufactured from 5 May.
