Direct flights between Sri Lanka and Poland will begin today with LOT Polish Airlines resuming operations again with three weekly services, with fresh push to roll out a joint program to promote tourism in the two countries.
The travel and tourism positive development came up for discussion when Tourism Minister Prasanna Ranatunga and Polish Ambassador to Sri Lanka Prof. Adam Barakooski met yesterday in Colombo.
Ranatunga said a number of airlines have resumed operating to Sri Lanka post-pandemic.
“Prior to the COVID-19 outbreak, 37 airlines operated direct flights to Sri Lanka. Since the reopening of the country, 23 airlines have resumed passenger flights to Sri Lanka, whilst more airlines have resumed cargo operations,” the Minister said.
LOT Polish Airline is scheduled to operate flights on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays.
Attention was also drawn to the implementation of a joint program to uplift the tourism industry between Sri Lanka and Poland.
The Ambassador said that Polish tourists are paying more attention to cultural tourism and wellness tourism.
It was decided to hold a special discussion between the representatives of the Sri Lankan and Polish tourist organisations in the future and to prepare a program to attract more tourists to Sri Lanka accordingly.
Polish Embassy in New Delhi Second Secretary Ewa Stankiewicz, Tourism Ministry Secretary S. Hettiarachchi, Aviation State Ministry Additional Secretary, Sri Lanka Tourism Chairperson Kimarli Fernando and Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) Director-General Dhammika Wijayasinghe were also present at the discussion.
