Jan-April tea crop reaches 5-year high of 104 m kg

Tea production in the first four months of this year has risen to a five-year high of 104 million kg, according to Asia Siyaka Commodities.

This is almost 40% more than last year’s severe drought-impacted four-month figure of 74 million kg, it added.

Low Growns have gained almost a month’s production YoY to reached 63.7 million kg. High Growns at 22.9 million kg and Mediums at 17.4 million kg are up 33% and 38%, respectively, as against the first four months of 2020.

The April crop increased by 42% to 29.5 million kg from a year earlier, when the crop was impacted by drought and the COVID-19 lockdowns. In April last year, it was at 20.8 million kg.

Asia Siyaka Commodities said High Growns recorded a sharp 64% increase to reached 6.8 million kg.

Low Growns crop amounted to 17.2 million kg, up 27% from a year earlier. Medium Growns rose by 78% to 5.5 million kg.
