Investigation reports on the Wasim Thajudeen and Lasantha Wickrematunge murders as well as four other high-profile cases have been submitted to Attorney General Dappula de Livera by Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) C.D. Wickremeratne, Police said yesterday.
The AG had requested the acting IGP to submit reports on five high-profile cases investigated by the CID, to be handed over to him, on 15 August.
Speaking to the media at Police headquarters, Police Media Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekara said the Acting IGP had handed over the reports on the assassination of Lasantha Wickrematunge, the killing of 17 aid workers in 2006, the murder of rugby player Wasim Thajudeen, the abduction of Keith Noyahr, and the disappearance of 11 youth in Trincomalee. “Other than these reports, an additional report on the investigations into the abduction of journalist Prageeth Ekneligoda has also been handed over to the AG by the Acting IGP. The investigation will be concluded within a reasonable time period,” Gunasekara said.
The Police spokesman said the investigation into the abduction and assault of Keith Noyahr is expected to be completed within two months.
Meanwhile, Gunasekara said another member linked to the Jamathei Millathu Ibrahim (JMI) group, which was responsible for the Easter Sunday attacks, was arrested in Ampara on Thursday. The suspect is believed to have received training in Nuwara Eliya with National Thowheed Jama’ath leader Zahran Hashim.
