Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera yesterday said that a record number of 46,000 new tax files were opened at the Inland Revenue Department (IRD) last month.
“This opening of a record number of new tax files is a reflection that the general public has recognised it as a social obligation and not a responsibility. They have come forward to pay their due taxes as responsible citizens,” he told journalists in Colombo yesterday.
According to him, the tax revenue had increased to 12.6% in 2017 from 10.3%, while total government revenue had increased to 13.8% last year.
