This Christmas brings good cheer, for spirits at all Tourist Board approved hotels are now officially legal on Christmas Day, bringing much joy to the formal industry and guests.
Hitherto, Christmas being a religious holiday, sale of liquor was banned; however, after much lobbying by the private sector and with the support of Sri Lanka Tourism’s new administration, the industry has achieved a breakthrough this year.
The Excise Commissioner issued a notice permitting the sale of liquor at all Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority-approved hotels.
The Hotels Association of Sri Lanka (THASL) President Sanath Ukwatte welcomed the move, saying the relaxation of Excise rules was a long-felt need, as the previous law dampened the spirits of guests, especially from overseas, who had come to celebrate Christmas in Sri Lanka.
