Amidst growing opposition to the 20th Amendment to the Constitution, the government has decided to introduce several amendments to address concerns raised about the Bill.
One of the clauses that had come in for criticism was one which sought to remove state institutions from the oversight of the Auditor General – the AG’s powers will now be retained.
Changes will also be made to the introduction of Urgent Bills, which are to be limited to security and disaster management/public emergency matters.
The current limitation on the number of cabinet ministers and non-cabinet ministers may also be retained, the Daily FT learns.
These amendments will be in addition to several other amendments to the Bill which were submitted to the Supreme Court.
The amendments are to be moved during the committee stage debate of the Bill on Thursday.
