Aimed to rein in soaring pollution, the Government has decided to ban seven single-use plastic products from 1 June 2023.
Accordingly, the production, importation, selling and use of single-use plastic straws and stirrers, plastic plates, cups (except yoghurt cups), knives, spoons (including yoghurt spoons) and forks, flower garlands and string hopper trays will not be allowed in the country.
On 30 August 2021, the Cabinet of Ministers took into account a proposal seeking permission to prohibit seven single-use plastic polythene and plastic products in the country.
Subsequently, a committee of experts was appointed to look into the matter and to submit a report containing necessary recommendations.
The proposal for this effect tabled by Environment Minister Naseer Ashamed was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers at its meeting on Monday.
