The Gampaha Wickramarachchi Ayurveda institute is to be upgraded to the level of a fully-fledged university as part of the Government’s program to prioritise the study of indigenous medicine in the country.
The institute is currently affiliated with the University of Kelaniya under the University Grants Commission and offers undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Ayurveda and allied sciences. ‘Vistas of Prosperity and Splendour’, the policy framework of the country, has identified the institution to be upgraded as a fully- fledged university, Minister of High Education Bandula Gunawardena said.
A proposal by the Minister to upgrade the Institute to the level of a university was given approval by Cabinet on Wednesday. Meanwhile several other proposals in the higher education sector, too, were approved by Cabinet.
These include a proposal to award the contract for the construction of buildings under phase two of the Faculty of Technology at the Wayamba University of Sri Lanka to Sathuta Builders Company Kurunegala, for Rs. 1560.36 million (without VAT) upon the recommendation of cabinet appointed standing procurement committee.
Cabinet also approved a proposal for the construction of three separate buildings for a hostel, a workshop, and a canteen for the University of Vocational Technology, Ratmalana for an estimated cost of Rs. 927.34 million.
Minister Gunawardena also got Cabinet approval for a proposal to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for Education and Research between the University of Ruhuna and Guizhou Academy of Science in China.
The proposed MOU between the two universities is to facilitate the exchange of information, collaborate on research funding and to initiate joint graduate/postgraduate courses.
