The members of the President Gotabaya Rajapa-ksa-appointed expert committee yesterday visited several sites where Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG)-related fires and explosions took place recently.
The members of the expert committee along with the Police made inspection visits to the houses in Pannipitiya, Kottawa, Athurugiriya and Hanwella areas where incidents were reported.
Earlier this week (30), the President appointed an eight-member expert committee to probe into the recent incidents linked to LPG fires and explosions reported on domestic, commercial and sales outlets countrywide, and to provide immediate solutions for the issue.
The expert committee is tasked to gather information from all necessary parties and cites and look into existing studies, views from stakeholders and submit a report to the President within two weeks.
There had been 35 incidents related to LPG fires and explosions on Wednesday. They include 25 gas cooker explosions (all glass-top stoves), nine LPG leakages, and one incident where the regulator exploded. On Thursday, a further 10 incidents were reported.
Litro Gas distribution agents said a consumer awareness campaign was being carried out via brochures. They also pointed out that there had been a sharp decrease in the demand from the public.
