Dr. Rohitha Silva won the President’s Prize 2020 at the annual golf event organised by the Royal Colombo Golf Club (RCGC) worked off last weekend at the RCGC.
Silva netted 140 while Rohitha Fonseka ended a close second in the overall event ending at 141 net. Meanwhile evergreen golfer Sachin de Silva was the gross winner with a score of 153, playing some outstanding golf with top accuracy.
In the Masters event Mohamed Mihular won with Lal Dias ending second best. The Masters winner at the RCGC was A.S. Abdeen with Trevor Baines ending as second best. Young golfing sensation Kayla Perera was in sparkling form once more, winning the ladies event with a net score of 69, with Manori Jayakkody ending second with a score of 79 net. The day one best net winner was Yeun Kook Chung netting 66 points, while the second day’s best went to Michael Sathasivam.
History goes back 136 years, when in 1883 the President of the Club, Hon G.S. Williams instituted the Presidents Cup. The format was Match Play and there were 12 entries at the initial tournament. The event was won by J.N. Campbell. The Presidents Cup of 1897, the first at the Ridgeways Course, was won by G.F. Munro of Scotland.
The President’s Cup has been played continuously since inception, except during the second World War between 1942 and 1947, when the Club House and sections of the course were occupied by the military and all golfing activities were restricted.
