The Steering Committee will present its interim report along with additional observations to the Constitutional Assembly, which will meet this morning.
According to Steering Committee sources, the report will also contain submissions received from political parties, including the UPFA Joint Opposition parliamentary group as well as from other parties represented in Parliament. Female representation will be an added area compared to the contents of the previous report.
The draft interim reports which circulated within the Steering Committee at different times included matters covered by Chapter 1 and 2 of the present Constitution, including the nature of the State, sovereignty and religion. The Principles of Devolution including Land, Central Legislation on Provincial List Subjects, the Capital Territory, Second Chamber, Electoral System, the Executive, the Constitutional Council and Law and Order were the other areas.
Moving forward, the Constitutional Assembly will allocate a few days in October for the much-awaited debate. (AH)
