China says SL has wisdom to handle politics via dialogue

Reiterating its non-interference stand, China yesterday expressed the belief that Sri Lanka has the wisdom to handle the current political situation via discussion by all stakeholders. 

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lu Kang, making a comment on the current situation in Sri Lanka, said: “As a friendly neighbour, China is paying close attention to the situation change in Sri Lanka. It is a matter of internal affairs, and China has consistently supported the principle of non-interference in other country’s internal affairs.” 

“We believe that the Sri Lankan Government, political parties and the people have the wisdom and ability to handle it well. China hopes all sides in Sri Lanka can resolve their differences through talks, and safeguard the stability and development of the island country,” he added. 

Responding to a question, the Chunying held that Chinese leader was in touch with the newly appointed Prime Minister. “President Xi Jinping telephoned Mahinda Rajapakse. Our Ambassador in Colombo has personally met Ranil Wickremesinghe and Mahinda Rajapkse,” he added.

In a related development the Chinese embassy in Colombo said comments made by MP Ranjan Ramanayake of a Chinese conspiracy were baseless.

“Recent allegations about China by MP Ranjan Ramanayake is groundless and irresponsible. As a friendly neighbour, China is paying close attention to the situation change in Sri Lanka. It is a matter of internal affairs, and China has consistently support the principle of non-interference in other country’s internal affairs. We believe that the Sri Lankan government, parties and people have the wits and ways needed to deal with the current situation.”
