Archbishop of Colombo Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith has requested the President and the Government to accept responsibility for the ongoing economic crisis and step down.
“The Government and President have no moral right to continue in office anymore under the current economic circumstances and should hand over power back to the people without causing further suffering to them,” he told journalists yesterday.
The Cardinal also said the arbitrary and short-sighted decisions of the Government during the past two and a half years led to the present turmoil and charged that the Government has no plan nor vision to solve the present crisis.
He also pointed out that the public has a strong sense of dislike towards the Government and lacks faith in the administration, especially as the Rajapaksa’s continue to remain in power.
“The biggest obstacle to liberating this country from this sad situation is the fact that the Rajapaksa family continues to stay in power in spite of a majority of the people in this country not reposing any trust in them anyway,“ he added.
Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith urged that the public not be left in anguish any longer and to grant the people their rightful futures.
