Archbishop of Colombo Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith yesterday called on the Government to pave the way for a new beginning, citing that the country is in dire straits.
“The Government must not disregard requests put forth by the Maha Nayaka Theros,” he told media on arrival at the Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake yesterday, after visiting His Holiness Pope Francis in Vatican, Italy.
The Cardinal said during his visit concerns were expressed to His Holiness Pope, who also called for justice for the victims of the 2019 Easter Sunday attacks.
Noting that Sri Lanka is in dire straits, the Cardinal expressed hope that leaders will act responsibly.
“The people of the country are facing a multitude of issues and it is the responsibility of politicians to address them. The leaders must not be dramatic and focus on resolving the current crises,” he added.
The Cardinal also said that the legal system is bent according to the will of the President and Prime Minister was disheartening, stressing that the supremacy of the law should be maintained.
