Cabinet gave approval for the implementation of a National Environmental Management Program, which would include the establishment of centres for sorting out waste, providing incinerators to selected local authorities, providing facilities for enhancing compost yards and setting up of new compost yards across the country.
A program titled ‘Pivituru Lanka’ will also include programs to raise public awareness on the importance of environmental conservation
In the proposal to the Cabinet, the Minister of Environment and Wildlife Resources S.M. Chandrasena noted that it is imperative to develop a specific program to enhance public awareness on the responsibility of environmental management and thereby increase public participation as well as of other relevant stakeholders, including local Government institutions.
