The Cabinet of Ministers who met yesterday decided to defer a decision on the fresh tariff hike proposed by the Ceylon Electricity Board until next week.
The proposal was discussed at length but it was decided to study further.
The Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka, political parties and consumer lobbies have strongly opposed the “unaffordable and unethical” hike though the CEB and the Minister have justified it as critical.
Separately the Cabinet approved the proposal by Trade Minister Nalin Fernando to allow the import of eggs as a measure to ease the shortage and high prices of domestic production.
