Cabinet has approved the allocation of Rs. 10 billion to import 150,000 MT fertiliser to cultivate 253,000 acres in Yala Season.
Cabinet co-spokesman Ramesh Pathirana said the distribution of fertiliser will start from 20 May.
“The Government will also encourage the cultivation of 16 additional crops for which the Government has provided a guaranteed price.” Moreover, the Government will be introducing a new loan scheme “Aswenna” up to Rs. 30,000 though People’s Bank, as well as establishing 200 specialised agriculture cluster villages.
It will also look at the establishment of 50 green gardens and 200 harvest selling outlets, as well as using 10,000 acres for special crop cultivations. The Government will also assist small and medium mill owners financially and encourage reopening of closed mills.
