Cabinet agrees to make SLR a closed department

• Committee appointed to study and make recommendations on practical problems that may arise when implementing proposal
• This was one of main demands of SLR unions who struck work last month

Cabinet this week gave approval to convert Sri Lanka Railways (SLR) into a closed department and to introduce a specific and unique salary structure for the department. A committee was appointed to study and make recommendations on how to implement this proposal.

The committee, under the chairmanship of a senior official in the Ministry of Public Administration, Disaster Management, and Livestock Development, will study and make recommendations pertaining to the practical problems which may arise when implementing this proposal.

Making SLR a closed department was one of the main demands of the railway unions that struck work for nearly two weeks last month.
