Budget 2023 moots new institutions

Following are some of new institutions proposed in 2023 Budget presented by President Ranil Wickremesinghe. 

  • Agency for External Trade and Investment via the amalgamation of Board of Investment (BOI), Export Development Board (EDB), Sri Lanka Export Credit Insurance Corporation (SLECIC) and National Enterprise Development Authority (NEDA)
  • National Productivity Commission 
  • International Trade Office to deal with all the international trade negotiations. Foreign Ministry to be renamed as Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade
  • New Economic Zones in the Western Province, North-Western Province, Hambantota, and Trincomalee
  • New Department for Cinnamon Industry
  • Quality Assurance and Accreditation Board to ensure the quality and accreditation of degree courses conducted in universities
  • New medical faculty under Uva-Wellassa University
  • A new institution to undertake and facilitate research on the history of Sri Lanka
  • Data Protection Authority to regulate the processing of personal data in order to safeguard the privacy of citizens 
  • National Operations Centre for tracking implementation issues of all development interventions
  • Microfinance and Credit Regulatory Authority to ensure the protection of customers of microfinance and money lending businesses
  • International University for Climate Change
  • Presidential Commission on Taxation 
  • Presidential Commission on Public Service Reforms
