Veteran S.R. Attygalle yesterday stepped down as Secretary to the Finance Ministry and Treasury.

Speculation was rife that Central Bank Deputy Governor Mahinda Siriwardana will replace him.
Attygalle’s move follows the resignation by the entire Cabinet including Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa on Sunday.
Siriwardana has more than 30 years of service in the CBSL. He has held the key positions of Assistant Governor and Director of Economic Research Department of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka.
Siriwardana was on release to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as the Alternate Executive Director for the Constituency comprised of India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Bhutan during July 2017 to October 2019.
He was also on release to the Ministry of Finance from October 2010 to April 2015 to serve as the Director General of the Fiscal Policy Department and also as an Additional Director General of the National Planning Department.
Attygalle has held the position of Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL). He also held the position of Assistant Governor of the CBSL and was released to the Ministry of Finance to serve as the Deputy Secretary to the Treasury. Attygalle was appointed as the Secretary to the Treasury and the Ministry of Finance during 31 October 2018 to 18 December 2018 as well.
