The Sri Lanka Institute of Architects (SLIA) yesterday began ‘A18 (Architect 2018),’ the most anticipated trade exhibition in the country with President Maithripala Sirisena as the Chief Guest.
This grand event was held by the SLIA for the 36th consecutive time at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH) from the 22 to 25 February.
SLIA President Architect D. H. Wijewardane mentioned in his speech that Sri Lanka should be able to share architectural expertise with other nations, whilst also gaining new knowledge and know-how. The theme ‘Architecture to represent people and place’ addresses this concern very well. The Minister of Megapolis and Western Development – Patali Champika Ranawaka was present as the Guest of Honour for this occasion and mentioned in his speech that Sri Lanka would soon be one of the best countries to invest in with great development in architecture. The legendary architect’s exhibition has evolved to its peak as SLIA celebrates the 60th anniversary this year.
This event was further heightened with the presence and inauguration speech by the International Union of Architects (UIA) President architect Thomas Vonier. In his inauguration speech, Vonier mentioned that architecture has seen great revolution in the world and plays a very important role in bringing people together. Architect Thomas Vonier is a renowned professional in the architecture industry with global experience and has led many ground-breaking research for many US delegations which has brought about significant revolutionary results.
Members of the Sri Lanka Institute of Architects, members of other architectural institutions in the region, foreign guests, special invitees and students from the field of architecture were also present at the Inauguration Ceremony of the Annual Session of Architect 2018.
