NDB geared for development in Hambantota

National Development Bank PLC (NDB) in keeping with the development plans taking place in the South opened its newest branch in Hambantota over the weekend.   The opening of the NDB branch in Hambantota reiterates the Bank’s commitment to developing the area which is geared to become a commercial hub in the Southern Province.



NDB’s 61st branch in Hambantota was ceremoniously declared open by the Hon, Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa, in the presence of the Chairman of NDB Hemaka Amarasuriya and CEO Russell de Mel.

Hambantota, once part of an ancient kingdom, is an important place on the Ruhuna landscape with a thriving economy.

A gateway on the eastern sea route, through the Indian Ocean, Hambantota is famous for its salt pans as well as its wildlife and nature parks which are a paradise for local and migrant birds. The new port and airport, which are under construction, will expand Sri Lanka’s economy in many ways.  

In addition the new International Cricket Stadium has further established Hambantota as a major tourist location.

The Divi Aruna Livelihood Development Scheme was extended to the area where 58 recipients engaged in traditional cottage industries producing Kalu Dodol, Pottery and Handicrafts benefited from the loan scheme.  Two schools received musical instruments and books to their library as part of NDB’s CSR activities.  NDB also built a school ground for one of the schools.

NDB will be offering SME products to potential small and medium businessmen in support of the development activities in Hambantota. With its expertise and knowledge in SME financing services, the Bank will offer many financing facilities including short term working capital loans, supplier and distributor financing and long term funding, which will be beneficial to the businesses in the area

In addition NDB will offer customers a range of retail banking services, such as Current and Savings Accounts, Children’s Savings Accounts with an exciting gift scheme, NRFC/RFC Accounts, Fixed Deposits, Housing Loans, Education Loans, Personal Loans, Leasing facilities, Credit Cards, Debit Cards, Pawning services , Western Union Money transfer services, Internet Banking and Bancassurrance.

The Branch is located at No: 34, Wilmot Street, Hambanthota and will be open from Monday to Friday from 9a.m. to 4p.m.
