Mark Prothero appointed HSBC Sri Lanka and Maldives CEO

Mark Prothero has been appointed Chief Executive Officer for HSBC Sri Lanka and Maldives, effective 1 October 2016. 

After heading HSBC’s operations in Sri Lanka and Maldives since 2013, Patrick Gallagher will bid farewell to Sri Lanka and Maldives to take up a new role within the Group. 

Prothero, during a career of more than 26 years with the HSBC Group, has held senior positions in Commercial Banking, Global Banking and Markets, Risk Management and Internal Audit. His international experience has spanned the regions of North America, the Middle East, Europe and Asia, with roles in markets such as the US, Bermuda, the UK, Egypt, the UAE, Hong Kong and Thailand. 

Prior to his appointment as CEO of HSBC Sri Lanka and Maldives, he was Regional Head of Internal Audit for HSBC’s MENA region, responsible for audit coverage across nine countries.

During a career of more than 26 years with the HSBC Group, Prothero has held senior positions in Commercial Banking, Global Banking and Markets, Risk Management and Internal Audit, across markets in the US, Bermuda, the UK, Egypt, the UAE, Hong Kong and Thailand. 

He started his career with HSBC as a UK Graduate Trainee in 1990. After working in retail banking at HSBC Bank plc in the UK, he was posted to HSBC in Thailand as a Relationship Manager for the HSBC Securities Services business. 

Between 1996 and 2008, Prothero held a number of senior management roles including in the Global Trade and Receivables Finance business in Hong Kong, as Head of Securities Services for HSBC in Egypt, as Regional Head of Securities Services based in New York for HSBC USA N.A and as Head of Alternative Fund Services for HSBC Bank Bermuda. 

In 2008, Prothero was named Chief Risk Officer for HSBC Bank Bermuda and was subsequently appointed Executive Vice President and Deputy Chief Credit Officer for HSBC USA N.A, responsible for the credit risk management of the Commercial Banking portfolio.

In 2012, Prothero moved to Hong Kong where he was responsible for Global Internal Audit coverage of Wholesale Risk and Commercial Banking. He was then appointed Regional Head of Internal Audit for MENA, responsible for audit coverage of nine countries in the region.

Prothero holds a Bachelor’s degree in Geography from the University of Nottingham. He completed his Chartered Institute of Bankers (UK) qualification in 1994 and is also a Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialist (CAMS). 

Prothero is married with three children and enjoys playing golf and squash, and is an ardent follower of rugby and cricket.
