Grindlays Club Sri Lanka, an association of ex-employees of the long time leading bank in the country, which had a presence on the island from 1881 to 2000, held its annual year-end get together at the 80 Club of Colombo recently on a grand scale, and was attended by a large number of ex- Grindlays’ staff, including scores of reputed bankers.
Among this elite group of bankers are eight CEOs of banks, who are either currently holding office or held such posts in the recent past, and a further significant number of the Club’s members currently hold top executive positions in banks and other financial institutions.
The annual Christmas party of the Club also attracted several of its members who are domiciled overseas, who travelled to Colombo to enjoy a fun-filled night of fellowship, and has been a much looked forward to event every year since 2004, the year the club was formed.
Since its inception, the Club has been donating drugs and equipment every year to the Cancer Hospital in Maharagama, a project initiated in 1994 by a group of members while they were in employment at Grindlays Bank.
An amazing fact is that the Club’s membership has been growing steadily every year, despite the fact that those eligible to apply for membership has not been increasing since Grindlays ceased to function as a bank in Sri Lanka at the end of December 2000.
The club has already drawn up elaborate plans to celebrate the 10th year in December 2013 on even a grander scale than what they have been doing annually, an event that is expected to be attended by a very large number of its members here and overseas.
