The Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE) launched the first phase of the ‘Insight into Investing’, an island wide investor awareness program with the much anticipated Investor Day in Nittambuwa.

A large crowd consisting of both current and potential investors was attracted to the Investor Day which was held in two sessions where one segment was held for the teachers and students, and another for potential investors. The main focus of the Investor Day was to educate the general public on share investments.

“The program was very useful for the students. Although we teach them the theoretical aspect with regard to the Stock Market, they were able to gain valuable practical knowledge through this program in a clear and comprehensible manner,” W.A.K.K. Wiyathunga, a Commerce Teacher at the Ratnavali Balika Vidyalaya said. Furthermore, acknowledging the objective of the program, a Commerce Teacher at the Kamburugala Maha Vidyalaya Pathmini Thambugala observed that it was not only helpful for the students, but that it was also valuable for the teachers.

The Investor Day was marked by continuous presentations which enabled the participants to obtain a comprehensive understanding on the functions of the stock market. The success of the program was evident with numerous participants enrolling for the education workshop, which will be the second phase of the awareness program.

Moreover the participants were able to interact with the brokers and other officials to clarify several issues with regards to investing. “We are very thankful to the CSE for coming to our district with this programme. We were able to clarify many matters and misconceptions we had about the Stock Market,” A.K.R. Lenin, a Government employee from Gampaha said.

A private sector employee in Nittambuwa, Dilum Kekulawala praised the CSE in its endeavours for reaching out to the people in remote areas and facilitating their access to the benefits of the Stock Market. He added that it was only through the program that he realised how little knowledge the public had about the functions of the Stock Market, which they generally acquired through the information in the media.

The second Investor Day in line with the island wide awareness program will be held at the Singapore Hall in Hambanthota on 20 September.
