The Commercial Bank of Ceylon has extended its mobile banking facility to a wider cross section of Sri Lankans by offering the service to subscribers of Dialog, the country’s largest mobile telephone network. This facility is operated on USSD (Unstructured Supplementary Service Data) technology used by GSM phones to communicate with their service providers’ computers. With its easy to access menu-driven portal, USSD-based mobile banking offers greater convenience and functionality enabling users to carryout numerous banking transactions including Account Balance and Credit Card Balance Inquiries, Utility Bill Payments, Fund Transfers,  Exchange Rate Inquiries, PIN Changes, Mobile Reloads and request Micro Statements. Because these services are offered on the USSD platform, they can be accessed via any phone ranging from a basic phone to the most advanced phone unit that is in the market and do not require an Internet connection. Chief Manager e Banking Division of Commercial Bank,  Pradeep Banduwansa said “Our partnership with Dialog on USSD-based mobile banking represents a quantum leap in convenience for thousands of Commercial Bank customers using Dialog connections. It is extremely easy to use, completely secure and is one of the most convenient forms of mobile banking available.” Commercial Bank’s mobile banking service can be used to make outstanding payments in respect of credit cards issued by the Bank, as well as cards issued by several other banks. Users can also pay their water and electricity dues respectively to the National Water Supply and Drainage Board and CEB and LECO. Payment of insurance premiums to Ceylinco Life, Sri Lanka Insurance (Life and Motor), Janashakthi (Life), Union Assurance, AIA Insurance, Asian Alliance (Life) and Amana Takaful (Life) is also possible, and Pay TV subscribers of Dialog Satellite TV, LBN and Satnet TV can pay their bills using the facility. Dialog subscribers can access the USSD portal by dialling #8823#. Once a customer dials into the USSD portal, he or she has to select the required function and enter a Personal Identification Number (PIN) provided by the bank for authentication after which the system will execute the request. The cost on USSD is the lowest as it is session-based. The one-off set up fee has been waived until 31st December 2013 to encourage new registrations.
