Alwis has a brilliant track record in the field of insurance with academic qualifications as well as professional experience. Having graduated with a BSc. Special (Hons) in Marketing Management from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura in 1998 he passed ACII from the Chartered Insurance Institute, UK in 2010 to become a Chartered Insurer in 2012.

Alwis started his career as an executive officer of National Insurance Corporation in 2000 and moved to Janashakthi Insurance PLC in mid-2001 as the former corporation was privatised. Then his next posting was at HNB Assurance PLC as a Senior Executive Officer in January 2002. Later he was promoted to the post of Assistant Manager there. Having worked for HNB for quite a while, Alwis then moved to Asian Alliance Insurance PLC as Manager – Non Life Insurance in 2007.  He was then promoted to the position of Senior Manager of the same section in 2011. Still moving up in the ladder, he joined MBSL Insurance Ltd. in September 2014 as Assistant General Manager – General Insurance. Since 2016 up to March 2019 he had been working as Acting CEO of MBSL Insurance. Currently, Alwis is working as a part time lecturer of Insurance in the Sri Lanka Insurance institute and representing Sanasa General Insurance Company at Insurance Association of Sri Lanka, in addition to steering the company.
