The newly-appointed People’s Bank Chairperson Sujatha Cooray, a senior public servant, assumed duties at the Head Office of People’s Bank on 21 November.
Cooray is a Class 1 officer of the Sri Lanka Planning Service. She holds a B.A degree and a B.Phil degree from the University of Colombo. She also holds a MA in Development Economics from the Institute of Social Studies, The Hague, The Netherlands.
During over 30 years of her public service career, she has functioned as Secretary to the Ministry of Ports and Highways and also held high ranking positions in the Ministry of Finance as Deputy Secretary to the Treasury and Director General of Department of External Resources.
Apart from above, Cooray has served on the directorates of several private and State owned banks, Securities and Exchange Commission of Sri Lanka, Insurance Board, Board of Investment of Sri Lanka and Sri Lanka Tourist Board etc.
She has represented the Government of Sri Lanka in many international forums including annual sessions of World Bank/IMF, Asian Development Bank (ADB), Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP).
Currently she is a member of National Salaries and Cadre Commission.
