Central Bank Governor Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe’s recent statement, “We can now survive without bridging finance,” is utterly callous and contemptible to say the least.
Don’t you understand the consequences of your statement on the majority of citizens who have become vulnerable as they have been thrown into poverty overnight? Are you blind to the reality of:
1. How many children are crying for milk daily as it is unavailable and unaffordable?
2. How many families are foregoing nutritious meals, essential proteins, vegetables and fruits as they are unaffordable and unavailable?
3. How many elderly and children are foregoing medicines as they are unavailable and unaffordable?
4. How many livelihoods have been lost due to lack of fuel?
The list is endless as you very well know but deny it as it is an ‘inconvenient truth’.
Trying to balance the country’s reserves by starving the citizens is the fool’s – no blind fool’s – way out!
Famine and disease are just around the corner. We need a highway of finance not a bridge, Sir.
