‘United Buddy Bears’ to foster international understanding

Academy of Design (AOD) student Katrina Lappen won the Sri Lankan ‘United Buddy Bears’ design competition from among entries received from Sri Lanka and the Maldives. The Buddy Bear concept is unique to Berlin and is a life-size bear sculpture you can find across its streets.

Lappen as the winner from Sri Lanka was then commissioned by the German Embassy in Colombo to paint to life the sculpture, which now welcomingly stands at the entrance to the embassy. Likewise, alla Buddy Bears from the global competition rolled out this year are standing united on five continents as a symbol of multiculturalism.
