Q: What’s the storyline of Kauluwen Eha?
A: Since this a soft love song even though it has a very deep meaning we didn’t want to try an advanced concept. We wanted to keep it simple and sweet and I felt that I should do something smooth and romantic to make the audience feel it better. It’s about a young couple who live their married life happily and peacefully in their own way.
Q: How was the feedback for your last release ‘Sansara Gane’?
A: Great. I’m more than happy about the feedback for it. It received excellent feedback on all leading TV stations in Sri Lanka and has 300,000+ views on YouTube as well within just five months.
Q: Why did you want to make a slow love song?
A: ‘Sansara Gane’ was a duet and I wanted to do an upbeat funky track after it but the majority of the requests from my fans was to do another solo love song. So I had a discussion with my audio engineer Shenal and we thought of producing a fresh sound of Yashan from all aspects, musically and vocally.
Q: How much does it cost for you to make a music video?
A: Well it depends, mainly according to the concept and story board of the video and it varies with the duration of the shoot, locations, production crew, outfits and cast. If I were to give figures, for ‘Sansara Gane’ I spent around Rs. 400,000 and the expenditure for ‘Kauluwen Eha’ was around Rs. 300,000.
Q: How do you recover it?
A: I don’t think that I have ever intentionally produced a song or a video on money recovery purpose as it kills the creativity of the artist and also the song and video. Music is also a business when it comes to professionalism as a musician but I always try to bring my heart out with a song or from a video. I give my best and try to do something different and new every time I’m producing a record. I think that’s how it should be because our fans expect good music, and if we produce good music then money comes automatically in this music industry from sponsors, shows, YouTube, ring-in tones and record labels.
Q: How’s your TV show going?
A: All good. Its call ‘Music Xpress’ and you can watch it live every Sunday from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Siyatha TV. Channel No. 21 on Peo and Channel No. 15 on Dialog TV and you can watch it live on YouTube as well.
Q: Apart from your show, what’s your favourite local TV show?
A: I like Roba Eve with Saasha and Prabath on Channel One MTV. It’s fun and cool.
Q: How can fans reach you?
A: You can contact me by dropping an email to [email protected], stay in touch with me @www.facebook.com/darealyashan and follow me on Instagram @yashan_insta.
Q: Who are the main team behind your latest release ‘Kauluwen Eha’?
A: Gamini Chamara of Digital Eye Studios is the main man who directed this video clip and I would also like to thank Harshani Ruman for her immense dedication towards this project, Dr. Namal Balachandra for all my exclusive outfits and Aravinda of Smart Flora for creating a wonderful set on the beach, Dharshana of Hybrid Homes who encouraged me from all ends and Hotel Berjaya General Manager Pravir Mishra for supporting me to the maximum to make the output look better. Musically, the effort put into this by Shenal and Sandun were outstanding and I’m so grateful for their commitment.
Q: What have you got in store to be released?
A: We released two singles last December, ‘Muthu Paradana’ of Madawa Warnapura who plays for Bloomfield Cricket Club and “Adara Hodiya’ of Nethu (tracks are available online). We are planning to film music videos for both. I produced a song plus a music video for Sachithra Senanayake, the star cricketer of Sri Lanka, and the video for it will be released soon after he returns from the ongoing New Zealand tour. I also did an audio track for the legendary cricketer T.M. Dilshan and his wife Manjula as well and we are in the process of planning the music video.
