WNPS monthly lecture on ‘Living with Bird Flocks in Sinharaja’

The monthly lecture of the Wildlife & Nature Protection Society of Sri Lanka will be delivered by Sarath Wimalabandara Kotagama, Professor of Environmental Science, Department of Zoology, University of Colombo, titled ‘Living with Bird Flocks in Sinharaja’. His academic contribution spans across the globe as an Adjunct Professor of Brandeis University (USA), Visiting Lecturer Konan University, Japan. He is also a visiting Lecturer at the University of Moratuwa, University of Sri Jayawardenapura, University of Sabaragamuwa and University of Rajarata Is the recipient of many national and international awards for scientific research and outstanding contribution to environmental conservation Prof. Kotagama’s main research interest has been in mixed species flocks in rainforests. He has been studying the flocks in the Sinharaja rain forest for the past 25 years. This is the longest study on bird flocks in the world. He was the author of The National Wildlife Policy for Sri Lanka (1990), the author of the National Wetland Conservation Policy for Sri Lanka (1997), the sector author on Environmental Education for the National Conservation Strategy (1985), a member of the National Science Policy Committee (1984), and the author of the Strategy for the preparation of the National Biodiversity Action Plan for Sri Lanka (1977), a member of the Ministerial Task Force on Wildlife (1999-2000) and of the Presidential Task Force on Wildlife (2000) founder member in the formation of March for Conservation, Young Zoologists Association, The Sri Lanka Environmental Federation, The Mihikatha Foundation, Mihikatha Institute and the Eco-Tourism Society of Sri Lanka and was also the Director, Department of Wildlife Conservation from 1989 to 1992. Currently he is also the Scientific Advisor to the Minister of Wildlife Resource Conservation. The lecture will be delivered on Thursday 20 November at 6:15 p.m. at the Department of Meteorology Auditorium, 383, Bauddhaloka Mawatha, Colombo 7 (opposite BMICH). All are welcome and entrance is free.
