The Workshop Players has scheduled the first audition for their upcoming production of the rock opera musical Jesus Christ Superstar, written by Tim Rice and Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber.
This production recounts the ‘Greatest Story Ever Told’ in the earthiest, most democratic, most populist language of all – rock and roll. It is a masterpiece of musical theatre with universal appeal, across many generations of theatregoers. The auditions will be held on Sunday 23 June at the Soul Sounds Academy, No. 2B, Gregory’s Road, Colombo at 10:00 a.m. No prior singing, dancing or acting experience or qualifications are necessary.
All cast members must be over the age of 16. Performances of ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ are from 4 to 13 October 2013.
Over the last 21 years, The Workshop Players have become known for their successful musical theatre productions: ‘Cats’, ‘Les Miserables’, ‘West Side Story’, ‘The Lion King, Oliver!’, ‘Blood Brothers’, ‘Bugsy Malone’, ‘The Sound of Music’ and most recently, ‘Evita’.
The production team for the upcoming production of JCS includes veteran Artistic Director Jerome de Silva, Music Director Surein de S. Wijeyeratne and Director Choreography Shanuki de Alwis. The production team is headed by President of The Workshop Players, Akhry Ameer.
Specific details with regard to preparation for auditions can be found online on the Facebook event page, or could be e-mailed to you on request.
Those auditioning for specific lead, cameo or supporting roles should ideally be prepared to sing the songs from the production or they may perform a song of their choice, in keeping with the overall requirements of the role. Audition songs need to highlight acting ability as well as vocal ability. Vocal inflection, facial expressions, and body language are crucial.
If you don’t know your vocal range, The Workshop Players will help you determine it and at the end of this production you will surely be a seasoned thespian.
Dancers – Should ideally have some dance experience and training, but this is not essential.
Please come prepared with a short piece to perform. Ballet, Jazz, Latin, hip-hop, freestyle or contemporary style is acceptable.
