  • Winemaster Wilhelm Pienaar graces an evening of wine tasting and pairing
Indulge in The Kingsbury lifestyle; imbibe in a celebration of fine cuisine and luxury living. Certainly, the purveyors of the good life in hospitality have a knack for offering experiences par excellence and the “Nederburg Wine Makers Visit” scheduled for Monday 7 October is yet another example of the hotel’s partnership with the very best. Nederburg’s Winemaster Wilhelm Pienaar will grace an exclusive masterclass for Colombo’s wine aficionados with an evening dedicated to tasting of an array of Nederburg’s finest, combined with specialist tips on wine and food pairing. The masterclass will enable participants to bring alive the subtle but classically structured fruit-rich flavours and fragrant notes of each of the Nederburg vintages under the direct tutelage of a winemaker with a legacy and lineage of winemaking; a passionate individual for whom wine is not a job but a way of life. The son of a winemaker who still makes wine in Portugal, Wilhelm’s entire life has been about wine. He has a European Masters Degree in viticulture and oenology from the esteemed Montpellier SupAgro in France. He started his professional career at the House of JC le Roux gaining experience for two years as an assistant winemaker and then further two years as Cellarmaster. In 2009, he joined the celebrated Nederburg Wineries of South Africa as a Red winemaker. He currently works with as many as 23 different varietals sourced from most of the wine regions in South Africa and revels in infusing innovation to the red winemaking process. Nederburg is South Africa’s leading and most decorated name in wine, winner of more international and domestic awards than any other in the country. Recently judged the most successful producer on the SA Trophy Wine Show, the winery itself was an inaugural winner of the International Wine Tourism Award for Cape Town, presented by the Great Wine Capitals Global Network. Nederburg’s history, dating back to 1791, is remarkable for the pioneering and visionary ideals of those associated with the winery. Phillipus Wolvaart established the 49 hectare farm of Paarl Valley, and in just six years, the land was completely fruitful. Through revolutionary techniques such as cold fermentation, Johann Graue, who took ownership in 1937, established Nederburg as the leading producer of quality South African wines. During the 1930’s, Johann Graue pioneered the philosophy that a great wine starts in the vineyard and evolves through every step of the winemaking process. To this day, nothing has changed in the company’s approach. This purist approach creates wines of elegant indulgence and The Kingsbury’s philosophy of timeless elegance pairs well with the celebrated Nederburg approach. For those wine aficionados who want to be a part of this heritage, The Kingsbury invites you to join the “ Nederburg Winemakers Visit” on 7 October, 2013 at The Ocean from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Priced Rs. 4,800 (all inclusive) per person. For reservations or information call 0115635635 or 0771087720. Nederburg wines are imported and distributed in Sri Lanka by Favourite International.
