World No. 1 tennis player Victoria Azarenka and Asia’s top tennis pro Li Na became fashion models at a runway show on Friday (28 December) in Hua Hin a day before their tournament.
The World Tennis Charity Invitation is an annual event in the popular beach resort and is mainly focused on promoting tourism.
The players wore Thai silk gowns and had to brave the catwalk in front of the audience.
Azarenka tripped a few times during the show but did it gracefully while Li Na confessed that she was very nervous.
“I hope you enjoy it. I almost slipped twice, but I made it look like I was making a good walk,” Azarenka said with a laugh.
“I was very nervous in the beginning,” said Li Na.
“This afternoon the guy told me how to walk and then I was already nervous for the whole afternoon.”
Before the catwalk show, the ladies took part in a news conference where the competition was already heating up.
“I want to beat Vika here and I’ll win the Australia Open,” Li Na said. When a reporter asked if the Australia Open would be her next step, she simply replied, “No, I really want to beat her. After I win here, I can win the Australia Open.”
Azarenka won last year’s tournament in Hua Hin, but also looked ahead to future competitions.
“We don’t have any Olympic games next year so, it’s a little bit of less goals. But yeah, I’m excited. Serena is definitely the biggest challenge I had this year. So, as well as many players, you know the top ten, and the rest of the ranking. So I’m looking forward to that challenge,” she said.
