The Lionel Wendt will come alive with the sounds of Pop music on 31 May, and 1 June as the critically acclaimed female choral group Soul Sounds, led by Soundarie David Rodrigo, returns to enthral Colombo. Commencing at 7.30pm, “Sounds like Pop” will see the ladies take on a versatile mix of popular music ranging from the then to the now.
The choir, specialising in genres of gospel and spiritual, recently focused on expanding their repertoire by moving towards the pop genre, resulting in a tribute concert to Michael Jackson in August 2009. This time around as Elvis Presley, Madonna, Heart, Roxette, Destiny’s Child, Green Day, Katy Perry and Gloria Estefan, and so on.
Soul Sounds’ Music Director Soundarie David Rodrigo remarked, “This time we aim to push boundaries by venturing into another genre of music and giving it our own flavour. It is amazing how the pop music that we constantly hear on the radio lends itself so easily to completely new and interesting interpretations. Music truly is an art form that everyone can relate to and that is exactly what we are attempting to show through this concert. No song is too modern or too old to be enjoyed by anyone.”
The group has been working on selecting repertoire and has finalised a programme that they believe will be relevant to all ages. They are also working on producing a show both visually and vocally engaging. Soul Sounds’ choir leaders Roshni Gunaratne and Dakshitha Ratnayake noted that each group member’s efforts play a pivotal role in shaping the show and they draw inspiration from timeless musical icons and artists who have moulded the music industry to what it is today.
